The Torch Bearers are Getting Old…..

Their hair is either white or gone and they are coming to the point in their life where they are being forced to give up their passion to celebrate their patriotism.  Below are two pleas for help from our senior volunteers.

Viet Nam Memorial

On May 30, 1967 a memorial to the men who gave their lives in Viet Nam was commemorated in the Twin Falls City Park.  The following is an excerpt from the program handed out that day.

“After the tragic news of Brent Baumert’s death in Viet Nam in April of 1966, a small group of classmates decided to build a memorial for Brent and other fellows who lost their lives fighting in Viet Nam.

The project had its ups and downs at first but the hardest part was getting names of classmates to seek funds to build’ the memorial.  After a year’s hard work enough funds had been raised to build the memorial, in the Twin Falls City Park.  It took two fellows about two weeks’ hard work to finish the project.  The bronze plaques had been ordered from back East and had arrived for the official dedication, which had been set for Memorial Day 1967.

The dedication was to be a military one, with help from all the four armed forces.  The memorial committee was fortunate enough to have the help of some fine men in the service and reserves here in Twin Falls.”

The surviving member of the Viet Nam Memorial committee is Byrd Golay.  Byrd attended our January meeting asking for help concerning the memorial.  Since the day he and the others started on the memorial in 1967 until this day he has been the one to take care of it for those remembered.  The 17 names on the memorial are the men of Twin Falls County who gave it all in Viet Nam.  Due to his age, Byrd is looking for someone or some group to take over the caring for the memorial and the honor of remembering those who lost their lives in the war.  Any one or any group who might be interested can contact Mr. Golay through Commissioner Brent Reinke.  Brent’s email is brent.reinke@co.twin-falls.id.us.

American Flags Out on Holidays

In a similar note, Jimmy Berkley has notified us that Mervin Muscher who has been putting up and taking down the American Flags around town on federal holidays is looking for a replacement to take the job on.  Another case of age taking away the ability to honor our flag by making sure they are up to show off their colors on the holidays they fly.  You can contact Mervin at 208-420-1522.
